The European Union is working to accelerate antitrust approval for Project Bromo, a satellite joint venture between Leonardo, Airbus and Thales designed to create a European competitor to SpaceX and reduce reliance on U.S. satellite providers. According to Bloomberg, EU officials have spent the past year identifying potential competition concerns ahead of a formal filing, which is expected in the coming weeks.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has backed the initiative as a strategic industrial champion capable of strengthening Europe’s position in the future space economy. However, Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera warned that the project will not receive automatic regulatory approval. The venture also faces opposition from unions and suppliers concerned about employment and competitive impacts.
Project Bromo will be an early test of the EU’s revised merger-review approach.
