Indian shares up on value buying in HDFC Bank, Reliance

India’s equity benchmarks snapped a two-session losing streak on Monday on value buying in specific stocks, including heavyweights HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries. The Nifty 50 rose 0.83% to 25,682.75, while the BSE Sensex added 0.79% to 83,277.15. They had fallen about 2% in last two sessions, led by IT losses. India’s heaviest-weighted stock HDFC Bank rose 2.4%, snapping seven-session losing streak, where it lost 5.1%. Another index heavyweight Reliance Industries rose 1.2% after falling 3.3% in the last two sessions. “There is some value buying as well as churn from IT towards other sectors,” said Anita Gandhi, head of institutional business at Arihant Capital Markets. “With earnings season behind and U.S. trade deal largely factored in by markets, we expect benchmarks to consolidate in the near-term with positive bias.” Fifteen of the 16 major sectors logged gains. The broader small-caps and mid-caps added 0.1% and 0.5%, respectively. IT stocks posted marginal gains, rising 0.2% after last week’s sell-off on anxiety around AI automation tools and their impact on traditional software businesses.

Indian shares extend losses on trade deal jitters, rupee at record low

India’s equity benchmarks fell for a fourth consecutive session on Wednesday, as a delay in the trade deal with the United States and the rupee’s slide to a record low dented sentiment. The Nifty fell 0.18% to 25,986 and the Sensex shed 0.04% to 85,106.81. The indexes have lost 0.9% and 0.7%, respectively, in four sessions after hitting all-time highs on November 27. NSE provisional data showed foreign outflows from the Indian equity market totalled 98.64 billion rupees (about $1.1 billion) in the last four sessions. Meanwhile, the rupee slipped past the 90 per U.S. dollar mark to a record low on foreign selling. “Foreign investors continue to take money off the table despite solid GDP number for last quarter. This is partly due to weak industrial output and Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection data for October, and lack of certainty on trade deal with the U.S,” said Anita Gandhi, founder and head of institution at Arihant Capital Markets. Focus is now on the Reserve Bank of India’s policy decision on Friday, amid expectations that robust GDP growth data might lead to interest rates being held.

IT firms lead Indian shares higher on Fed rate cut hopes

Indian shares rose in early trade on Monday, driven by gains in information technology stocks after the US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell hinted at an interest rate cut next month. The Nifty 50 and the BSE Sensex both rose 0.3% to 24,955.05 and 81,571.03 points, respectively, as of 9:49 a.m. IST. Thirteen of the 16 major sectors gained while the broader midcaps and smallcaps advanced about 0.4% each. Powell pointed to a possible September interest rate cut in his Jackson Hole Symposium speech on Friday, saying that risks to the job market were rising, even as he noted that inflation remained a threat and that a decision wasn’t set in stone. This led to a rise in rate cut expectations, with traders now seeing an 84% chance of a cut in September compared to 75% before Powell’s speech. Lower US rates make emerging markets, including India, more appealing to foreign investors. IT companies, which get a substantial portion of their revenue from the US, jumped 2.5% and were the biggest contributors to the benchmark’s gains. “The US rate cut should be helpful for the IT sector as it can revive technology spending, but India-US trade uncertainty is an overhang for the market ahead of the looming deadline for additional 25% tariffs,” said Anita Gandhi, founder and head of institutional business at Arihant Capital Markets.

Indian benchmarks end little changed; GDP data awaited

India’s benchmark indexes settled flat on Thursday as caution prevailed amid monthly derivatives settlements and ahead of the release of GDP data on Friday, with investors waiting for signs of a pickup in economic activity. The Nifty 50 fell 0.01% to 22,545.05, while the BSE Sensex closed 0.01% higher at 74,612.43. The indexes swung between 0.3% gains and 0.2% losses during the session, during which the February derivatives contracts expired. The Nifty 50 index has fallen about 14% from record highs hit in late September and is on course for its longest monthly losing streak since 1996. “The market is likely to remain range-bound even on Friday. We may see some directional moves on Monday based on the GDP data and global news flow,” said Anita Gandhi, founder and head of institutional business at Arihant Capital Markets. India’s GDP, due after markets close on Friday, likely rebounded in the December quarter, after growing at an unexpectedly slower pace in seven quarters in July-September, according to a Reuters poll of economists.
