Activist hedge fund Starboard Value, which manages approximately $8.2 billion in assets, has built a stake in Solstice Advanced Materials large enough to rank among its 10 biggest shareholders. Starboard is urging management to cut about $100 million in general corporate expenses and focus resources on its core refrigerants and nuclear-energy services businesses. The activist’s involvement follows Solstice’s failed $14.5 billion merger with Element Solutions, canceled in late August after shareholders rejected the deal’s pricing. Starboard believes the standalone company is significantly undervalued and sees particular upside in its nuclear business, which supplies a key chemical used in uranium enrichment. The segment could benefit from rising electricity demand driven by AI data centers and the U.S. government’s 2028 deadline to phase out Russian enriched-uranium imports. $SOLS $SPX

$SOLS Starboard's Jeff Smith unveiled a new stake Tuesday and called the stock "stupid cheap." The fund is now a top-10 holder, with a stake worth several hundred million dollars, per FT and Reuters. The ask is pretty specific: focus on refrigerants and nuclear, and cut about 100 million dollars in overhead. Shares are still down roughly 30% since the June 30 high, after the 14.5 billion dollar Element Solutions deal was scrapped in August. Nuclear revenue rose 27% in Q2 to 125 million dollars.
