The cryptocurrency then took off with the innovation of the turing-complete smart contract by Ethereum which led to the development of other amazing projects such as EOS, Tron, and even crypto-collectibles such as CryptoKitties.

It also set a goal of reducing net debt to between $14 billion and $18 billion by 2027, down from nearly $23 billion as of last year.BP’s aggressive cost-cutting move came after years of underperformance compared to peers such as ExxonMobil and Chevron, following failed bets on renewable energy amid a boom in oil prices. BP To Sell Stakes In US Assets For $1.5B In Cost-Cutting Drive

Brent crude had slumped to around $60 per barrel last month, as the rapid unwinding of OPEC+ supply cuts amid trade uncertainties raised investor concerns.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Did OPEC+ Say?</h2>Eight members of the group, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the UAE, met virtually on Sunday and agreed to bring 137,000 barrels per day of production back online. This was part of the 1.65 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil that OPEC+ aims to produce after a voluntary production cut in April 2023 to regain market share.OPEC+ has been rapidly unwinding previous production cuts since April and has so far brought back over 2.5 million bpd worth of output. At their peak, production cuts totaled 5.85 million bpd, or nearly 6% of global supply.However, the group revealed it was pausing rapid hikes, as several analysts project that supply will outpace demand in 2026, affecting the bottom lines of energy firms. “Due to seasonality, the eight countries also decided to pause the production increments in January, February, and March 2026,” OPEC+ said in a statement.What Did Analysts Say?“The pause in raising output could even represent the start of a transition from the effort of OPEC+ to recapture market share toward a more supportive posture that holds back on supply in support of higher prices,” said analyst Tim Evans on the Evans On Energy newsletter.Russia remains a key supply wildcard, according to Helima Croft, RBC Capital's Head of Commodities Strategy, Reuters reported. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called on Moscow to immediately agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine.<blockquote>“Given President Putin’s refusal to end this senseless war, Treasury is sanctioning Russia’s two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin’s war machine. Treasury is prepared to take further action if necessary to support President Trump’s effort to end yet another war.”— Scott Bessent, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury</blockquote><h2 class="st-heading-2">Effectiveness Of Sanctions</h2>The firm’s analysts stated that it remains to be seen whether the Trump administration’s sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil are effective, or whether Russia can circumvent them as it did the curbs announced by the Biden administration in January.In January, Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas were sanctioned along with a large part of Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers. “These sanctions had little impact on Russian oil exports,” the firm noted.The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund LP</a> (USO) rose 4%, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/UCO">ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Crude Oil</a> (UCO) was up by 3.8% at the time of writing. The SPDR Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), which tracks energy firms in the S&amp;P 500, has declined 3.9% this week amid a weakness in oil prices.The ETF, which has approximately $26.52 billion in assets under management, is on track to record its worst weekly decline since late May. The declines follow a more than 7% drop in both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude prices this week, due to concerns about oversupply. The producer group has already brought back 2.5 million barrels per day (bpd) worth of nameplate capacity this year, which has pushed oil prices lower.“If OPEC+ does go ahead and announce a 500,000 bpd increase this weekend, it’s likely a big enough increase to send crude oil lower again, initially to support at $58.00, before a test of this year’s lows $55.00 area,” IG analyst Tony Sycamore said. Concerns over the U.S. government shutdown curtailing economic activity and the resumption of Iraq’s Kurdish oil exports are also weighing on the crude price, he added.Among individual stocks, Occidental Petroleum has fallen 6.8% this week, following its agreement to sell its Oxychem unit to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway for $9.7 billion. However, analysts were not enthusiastic about the mega deal due to its timing.Roth MKM analysts stated that while the sale would help the oil and gas producer reduce its debt, it could negatively impact free cash flow growth in the coming years, as the unit was expected to contribute significantly to expansion.However, HSBC analysts upgraded the stock to 'buy' from 'hold' after noting that the share pullback from disappointment in the OxyChem sale price "presents a great buying opportunity."Separately, oil prices edged higher on Friday following a fire at a Chevron refinery in Los Angeles County. This Energy ETF Is Heading Toward Its Worst Week In Four Months — Can A Late Rebound Save The Day?

The declines follow a more than 7% drop in both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude prices this week, due to concerns about oversupply.

Oil prices gained marginally in volatile trading on Wednesday as investors assessed the commentary by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as well as U.S. President Donald Trump’s shift in stance around the Ukraine War.Benchmark Brent crude prices rose 0.4% to $67.88 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate prices also gained 0.3% cents to $63.64 per barrel at 5.10 a.m. ET. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits about the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund</a> (USO) was in the ‘bullish’ territory at the time of writing.Both benchmarks climbed by more than $1 a barrel on Tuesday as a deal to resume exports from Iraq's Kurdistan stalled, halting pipeline shipments of approximately 230,000 barrels per day of oil from the region to Turkey, following requests from two key producers for debt repayment guarantees. Pipeline flows have been stopped since March 2023.Later in the day, President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine can reclaim all its territories, marking a reversal of his earlier stance, where he urged Kyiv to cede some of its territories to Russia. According to an AFP report, the Kremlin replied that there was “no alternative” for Russia than to continue its offensive on Ukraine that it launched in 2022.Trump has already urged Europe to scale back their purchases of Russian energy and floated higher tariffs on the buyers of Russian oil, including Russia and India.Separately, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell hinted that the U.S. central bank could take a hawkish approach to interest rate cuts. “Near-term risks to inflation are tilted to the upside and risks to employment to the downside — a challenging situation. Two-sided risks mean that there is no risk-free path,” Powell said in a speech on Tuesday.The U.S. dollar also advanced, capping some gains in oil prices. A stronger dollar makes the commodity more expensive for overseas buyers.Oil traders are also keenly awaiting the weekly U.S. crude inventory data. Oil Prices Gain In Choppy Trading As Traders Assess Comments From Powell, Trump

Oil prices fell on Thursday as investors dissected U.S. crude inventory data after an expected rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve.Benchmark Brent crude prices fell 0.5% to $67.56 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate prices also declined 40 cents to $63.64 per barrel at 3.42 a.m. ET. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits about the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/USO">United States Oil Fund</a> (USO) was in the ‘bullish’ territory at the time of writing.The U.S. Federal Reserve delivered a widely anticipated 25-basis-point rate cut on Wednesday, following recent labor market weakness. However, markets remain divided on how many future rate cuts the Fed might announce this year.In his press conference, Powell emphasized the central bank’s tough ask of balancing its goal in an unusual situation, although he expressed concerns about the weakening labor market. Earlier in his speech, he called the September cut a “risk-management” cut, with the market interpreting the phrase as meaning “meeting-by-meeting” decision on future cuts."What caught markets’ attention was not just the easing, but Powell’s downbeat message," Phillip Nova analyst Priyanka Sachdeva said, according to a Reuters report, after saying that markets have already priced in two more rate cuts this year."He stressed weakening job markets and inflation that remains sticky, making the cut look more like risk-management than a demand booster," she noted.Investors were also concerned about oil demand in the world’s largest economy. U.S. crude oil inventories decreased last week, primarily due to a decline in imports and a sharp increase in exports, according to the Energy Information Administration's data.However, distillate stockpiles jumped by 4 million barrels, compared with market expectations of a 1.2 million barrel gain, according to ING commodities data.“This was the highest level seen since late January as exports continue to edge lower.
