Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio stated on Friday that gold has started replacing some U.S. Treasury holdings as the riskless asset for investors, amid a continued surge in the yellow metal’s prices.Answering questions by users on X, Dalio&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/RayDalio/status/1979221211188998472">called</a> gold “the most sound fundamental investment,” adding that it is a very effective diversifier to other asset classes like debt and equity.“A factual answer to your question is yes gold has begun to replace some US Treasury holdings as the riskless asset in many portfolios, most importantly in central banks and large institutional portfolios,” he said, adding that the holders of these portfolios have reduced their U.S. Treasury holdings relative to their gold holdings.“Gold is the most well-established currency—in fact it is now the second largest held by central banks—and has proven to be much less risky than all government’s debt assets,” Dalio added.The billionaire hedge fund manager’s comments on gold come at a time when the yellow metal has been on a record-breaking spree. Spot gold prices have surged 15% over the past month, and more than 56% over the past year. The gold rally is not expected to end anytime soon, either.Dalio pointed to central banks printing money when they had “too much debt” to repay, thereby devaluing it. “History shows us that the biggest risk is that debt assets like U.S. Treasuries will either be defaulted on or devalued, more likely devalued,” he added, stating that historically, around 80% of all currencies have disappointed, while 20% have been “severely devalued.”Earlier on Friday, analysts at HSBC projected gold prices <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/gold-price-new-record-high-safe-haven-demand/ch6seUtR38E">to rise to $5,000</a> an ounce by 2026 on rising risks, according to a Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/india/gold-rallies-beyond-4300oz-set-best-week-five-years-2025-10-17/">report</a>. “Gold rally likely sustained through 1H'26 by geopolitical risks, economic policy uncertainty and rising public debt,” the firm stated in a recent note, adding that it expects central bank demand for gold to remain high.Following a nearly 5% surge over the past five trading sessions, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GLD">SPDR Gold Shares ETF</a> (GLD) was down 2.54% at the time of writing, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/IAU">iShares Gold Trust ETF</a> (IAU) declined 2.58%. The two sides then slapped fees on ships originating from each other, before Trump threatened a 100% tariff hike on all Chinese goods.U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent said on Wednesday that the U.S. could take further actions, including export controls, if Beijing took retaliatory measures and was also ready to impose tariffs on China over its purchases of Russian oil, if European allies agreed to do the same.Separately, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said earlier this week that the U.S. central bank will decide on interest rates on a case-by-case basis before also noting that economic conditions have not changed materially since the Fed’s last meeting, where it cut rates by 25 basis points. According to CME Group’s FedWatch tool, an overwhelming majority of traders expect cuts of similar levels in the next two meetings of Fed policymakers.“A reescalation in U.S.-China trade tensions has driven this week’s safe-haven demand, compounding a perfect storm of other tailwinds, surging geopolitical risks in Europe, ballooning fiscal debt concerns, and voracious buying from central and private investors,” IG analyst Tony Sycamore said.How has gold fared this year compared to Equities and Bitcoin?The bullion has gained over 60% this year, heading toward its best yearly gains since 1979. The S&amp;P 500 has gained 13.6% this year, while Bitcoin is up 19.3%. The sharp rise had led to strong flows into gold ETFs. The Fed had lowered interest rates by 25 basis points in the previous meeting.According to CME Group’s FedWatch tool, nearly 96% traders have priced in a 25-basis-point rate cut in the Federal Open Market Committee meeting later this month. Bullion and other precious metals tend to thrive in a low-interest-rate environment as investors use them as a hedge against inflation.The dollar index, which compares the greenback with a basket of currencies, also slipped 0.2% making the dollar-priced bullion attractive for overseas investors. Spot silver also rose 2.9% to $52.9 per ounce.Separately, tensions between the U.S. and China have risen again after President Donald Trump said the U.S. might halt its cooking oil trade with China due to Beijing’s reluctance to purchase American soybeans.“We are considering terminating business with China having to do with Cooking Oil, and other elements of Trade, as retribution.
